Life of the Party is all about living it up in all the right ways. We are a student group that encourages our fellow Gauchos to have fun in the Isla Vista and Santa Barbara social scenes and enjoy it regret-free. We’ve got tips on how to be a great party thrower, party goer, and how to avoid arrests and citations. Plus, we’ll give you a head’s up about DUI checkpoints and what draws the attention of the IVFP.

Tips
Tidbit #12:
Alcohol is classified as a depressant because it slows down the central nervous system causing a decrease in motor coordination, reaction time and intellectual performance.
Tidbit #30:
For most people, the liver can only process one ounce of liquor (or one standard drink) per hour.
Tidbit #13:
Seventy percent of college students admit to having sex when they wouldn’t have done so if they had been sober. At least 1 out of 5 college students have abandoned safer sex practices when drunk, something they normally do not do when they’re sober.
Tidbit #67:
Maybe that Vodka Red Bull wasn’t such a good idea… Alcohol mixed with energy drinks leads your body to feel less intoxicated than it actually is. Energy drinks also increase dehydration which leads to worse hangovers the next day. Try mixing or chasing with juice instead!
Tidbit # 90:
Warning! Mixing painkillers with alcohol is dangerous, and alcohol with Vicodin is about 3 times as dangerous. The mixture of these alcohol and painkillers can lead to intensified sedative effects and respiratory depression, which can be fatal.
Tidbit #92:
Warning! Mixing marijuana and alcohol can cause heavy vomiting, spins, very strong paranoia, decreased motor control and decreased mental concentration. Also, marijuana suppresses the gag reflex so you may not be able to throw up alcohol when your body needs to.
Tidbit # 7:
Warning! Combining cocaine and alcohol produces a high amount of cocaethylene (a third unique substance), which causes high pressure and stress on the heart.
Tidbit #32:
Alcohol lowers testosterone levels and increases estrogen. Since testosterone is the most important muscle-building hormone in your body, partying definitely affects your workout.
Tidbit #4:
Drinking 5 beers on Friday and Saturday will affect your workout through Thursday.
Tidbit #62:
Heavy drinkers consistently receive lower grades.
Tidbit #55:
Blackouts occur because of how fast you drink, not how much you drink. Be cautious of drinking games that encourage quick drinking, and set a limit for yourself.
Tidbit #18:
During a “true” blackout, no details are remembered, information is stored for two minutes or less and people tend to fall asleep before it’s over. Avoid blackouts by drinking slowly and eating before you drink.
Tidbit #19:
During a “partial” blackout, which are most common, there is usually missing information but some memory recall. Avoid blackouts by drinking slowly and eating before you drink.
Tidbit #26:
Having caffeine while drinking will not counteract the intoxication of alcohol; you simply get a more alert drunk person. Excessive caffeine will continue to lower your blood sugar and dehydrate you even more than alcohol alone.
Tidbit #93:
Giving water to someone who is throwing up won’t help sober them up. Once the stomach is irritated enough to cause vomiting, it doesn't matter what you put into it -- it's going to come back up.
Hangover Tip #12:
The only guaranteed way to avoid a hangover is to drink in moderation.
Hangover Tip #6:
Drinking alcohol the next day won’t help your hangover. You’ll just postpone the hangover ‘til later in the day.
Hangover Tip #3:
Be careful about taking Tylenol for a hangover headache. When the body has to process both alcohol and acetaminophen, it may produce substances that are toxic to the liver. Drink plenty of water instead!
Hangover Tip #10:
Eat a healthy meal after waking up from a night of drinking. Processing alcohol causes a drop in blood sugar and can contribute to headaches.
Hangover Tip #7:
Your biggest problem when you’re hungover is dehydration. Drink plenty of water and juice to get re-hydrated.
Hangover Tip #4:
If you wake up with an upset stomach from a hangover, take an over-the-counter antacid (Tums, Pepto Bismol or Maalox).
Hangover Tip #11:
Try eating complex carbohydrates like crackers, bagels, bread, cereal or pasta after a night of drinking to help relieve a hangover.
Party Thrower Tip #56:
Making your Facebook event “closed” helps keep uninvited randoms from wandering around your house.
Party Thrower Tip #42:
Make friends with your neighbors! Don’t forget to let them know when you’re planning on having a party and offer them your phone number. That way, they can call you instead of calling the police.
Party Thrower Tip #36:
Ask one of your friends to act as bouncer to keep out people you don’t know.
Party Thrower Tip #70:
A house that looks like a trashcan will be treated like one, so put in the extra effort to clean when you’re getting ready to throw a party.
Party Thrower Tip #78:
Try brainstorming an “evacuation plan” in case your party gets out of hand.
Party Thrower Tip #22:
Program the Isla Vista Foot Patrol number into your phone if you’re throwing a party. You might need it, you never know! (805) 681-4179.
Party Thrower Tip #96:
When throwing a party, buy non-alcoholic drinks along with your alcoholic drinks that way you can alternate and have a quality chaser.
Party Thrower Tip #14:
When considering your music options, put on a CD instead of using your iPod because there is a very good chance it will get stolen.
Party Thrower Tip #45:
Lock up the bedroom doors. This will prevent your stuff from getting stolen and a couple from consummating their hour long relationship on your bed.
Party Thrower Tip #68:
Keep only one bathroom available to guests. Chances are, the next day you’re not going to want to use the same bathroom that everyone else used during the party.
Party Thrower Tip #33:
Establish a set end time for the party you’re throwing. If you don’t, then people will stay as long as they want and no one wants to host a party that they’re tired of.
Party Thrower Tip #52:
Don’t forget to keep all cups and drinks inside the house. Nothing draws the Foot Patrol to a party more than people drinking on the street.
Party Thrower Tip #81:
Keep a set volume for the music because it has a tendency to creep up as the party progresses.
Party Thrower Tip #29:
Be aware of who is in your house. Strangers are more likely to start fights and out-of-towners are more likely to binge drink so make sure you keep an eye on everyone.
Party Thrower Tip #79:
Don’t forget about the restrictions on your lease. There may be certain things that you can’t do and if you get caught, you can get kicked out of your house.
Party Thrower Tip #5:
If you’re planning on providing food for your guests, avoid salty snacks- thirsty guests tend to drink more.
Party Thrower Tip #34:
People go to parties to socialize. If you promote alcohol as the main reason for the party, then that is what you’re going to get. A party that no one really remembers will probably not be remembered as a good party.
Party Thrower Tip #9:
Serve alcohol in closed containers instead of large open bowls of "jungle juice". It is much more difficult for people to drug closed containers, so it keeps your friends safer.
Legal Tip #35:
Know your rights! The AS Legal Resource Center gives free legal advice to UCSB students. They’re a great help if you or a friend gets a citation in Isla Vista. http://www.as.ucsb.edu/aslrc/
Legal Tip #21:
You can get cited for Disturbing the Peace if you fight or challenge to fight a person in a public place, if you’re willfully and maliciously loud in a public place, and even if you use aggressive or offensive words in a public place that could incite violence.
Legal Tip #68:
Anyone who is found in any public place under the influence and cannot take care of their own safety, or is passed out in a public place can be cited for a Drink in Public citation.
Legal Tip #16:
Just hold it. You can get a ticket for urinating in public. Start looking for a bathroom before it becomes an emergency.
Legal Tip #19:
Anyone carrying an opened alcoholic beverage can be cited for an Open Container. This still applies if you put the cap back on. Once the seal is broken, it is an “open” container.
Legal Tip #59:
If a keg is placed where the public can view it a party can be cited as a Public Nuisance.
Legal Tip #31:
In Santa Barbara County, there cannot be amplified noise which can be clearly heard from 100 feet of your property after 10 PM on weekdays and after 12 AM on weekends.
Legal Tip #14:
If you are stopped by the police, don’t run. Think carefully about your words and movements.
Legal Tip #9:
Do not interfere with, or obstruct the police. You can be arrested for it.
Party Goer Tip #12:
Eat a meal before you begin drinking. Drinking on an empty stomach gives you a greater chance of blacking out.
Party Goer Tip #16:
Alternate each alcoholic drink with a non-alcoholic drink.
Party Goer Tip #11:
Stick with your friends and don’t leave anyone behind. It’ll help prevent unwanted hook-ups or accidentally leaving anyone behind.
Party Goer Tip #44:
Avoid mixing drinks:
stick with one type of alcohol instead. Alternating different types of alcohol will raise and lower the sugar in your bloodstream, which can make you sick and put an end to a fun night.
Party Goer Tip #2:
Keep close to your friends, especially if one of them is very intoxicated. Be sure to check on them throughout the night since their BAC (Blood Alcohol Concentration) can still rise even though they’ve stopped drinking.
Party Goer Tip #39:
Always keep an eye on your drink and surroundings. Never leave your drink unattended.
Party Goer Tip #88:
Trust your instincts. If you’re at a party and you feel uncomfortable, find your friends and leave the party.
Party Goer Tip #76:
Keep cab numbers programmed in your phone just in case. Check out our Transportation page under the Party Goer section.
Party Goer Tip #20:
Program the CSO number into your phone in case you lose your friends. You never have to walk home alone. (805) 893-2000
